APPLICABLE EXCERPTS That Relate to the Involvement of “COMMUNITY” from the CINERGY GRANT APPLICATION/ Year 3
Section 1
Community technology facilities will be opened to community members as a resource for access to computers, the Internet, training and research outside the regular school day. Students, educators and community members will benefit from this expanded access to resources, enriched curriculum and exposure to the latest technology applications.
| · | A certain number of evenings per week will be set aside in specific buildings to provide a place for the use of computers. | |
| · | Teachers will be employed to act as support persons for those in the community who wish to use the computer facilities. | |
| · | Workshops on basic Internet access, using Public Library resources, Child Safety on the Internet, etc. will be made available on several of the evenings that labs are available | |
Section 2
The learning environment will support the growth of student competence as critical thinkers, as teachers move from being conveyors of knowledge to function as leaders, supporters and anchors for student learning.
Students will begin to mature as independent learners whether as collaborative team members or individuals who are willing to serve the learning community as innovators and knowledge producers . Students will develop the characteristics of lifelong learners and contribute to their communities
The community will continue to “grow as the school and the school will continue to become the community” as community resources/information become part of the student learning experience. Teachers will integrate into the curriculum the use of information garnered by community members.
| · | Students will need to utilize critical thinking skills as they thoughtfully examine primary resources made available through the CI online catalog . | |
| · | Students will be exposed to the human resources of the community. What will evolve “is a sense that world … and local history are … also personal family history, which provides a compelling context for student understanding.” (Library of Congress Memory Collection). | |
| · | Students will participate in “authentic learning “ projects that involve them in the collection and interpretation of digital photos, audio and video records and archives that will be shared via the CI database . | |
| · | Assessment will be manifested through the emergence of a collection of student products available through the CI database | |
The school district will continue to work with local community members to enrich the Community Information (CI) database, making it available for searching via the World Wide Web. As the community database expands, opportunities for authentic learning will increase.
| · | As a result of the identification of noteworthy people in the community, students will begin to collect interviews (both audio and video) that will link from the online CI catalog to a district archive of primary resources stored on Docushare. | |
| · | Noteworthy is defined as any resident who has or is currently contributing to the community, whether it be serving as a public servant or as an ordinary citizen. This person may be famous or contributing in a quiet way to the quality of life in the local or larger community. | |
| · | As a result of the identification of places, historical records and artifacts in the community, students will be encouraged to develop a digital collection of photos, videos, and/or audio records. Students will be asked to define in writing the importance to the community of these collections/artifacts | |
| · | Through this process, students will strengthen their ties to the community . | |
| n | By active engagement in the process, community members will grow in their understanding of the educational objectives of the district and benefit directly from the products of student work in authentic community-based research. | |
